Woodhaven Initials JNL were designed using an outline cast shadow wood type set against a rectangle with horizontal “engraving” lines to add background texture to the initials. An ampersand is on the corresponding keystroke, and a blank rectangle is on the period key.
The inspiration source for Memoriam Initials is the 1934 Book of American Types by American Type Founders. In that specimen book, they had created a sophisticated two color initial design they called “University Initials” which was only available in metal type at 24, 36, and 48 points.

The two color aspect of the original design has been preserved and made accessible within all programs. The Capital character slots contain the background color glyphs, and the lowercase slots hold the outline art for the letters.

Two fonts entirely of decorative initials of which the uppercase basic letters of RMU Initials One are occupied by Walthari Initials, the lowercase ones by Eckmann Initials, both released first by Rudhardsche Giesserei, Offenbach, Germany, about 1900.
RMU Initials Two consists of Jubilaeumsinitialen in the uppercases and Augsburger Initialen in the lowercases.
RMU Initials Three comes with floral ornaments, whereby the lowercase initials can be colorized by yourself due to non-joining elements.

In 1525, Albrecht Dürer, the well known German great artist, was publishing the so-called “Underweysung der Messung mit dem Zirckel und Richtscheytâ€, printed in Nuremberg. This handbook explained with numeral figures how to draw with a compass and ruler. A large part is devoted to the drawing of Roman characters, which can be used as decorative initials.
